Contaminated Waste & Materials Management

Our waste specialists offer bespoke materials and waste management strategies, encouraging maximum reuse of soils onsite and between projects. To date, we have helped our clients divert around 500,000 tonnes of soil from landfill and save over £15 million.

IKM’s knowledge and experience of providing waste classification advice, and managing the impacts of construction waste and associated materials, allows us to provide pragmatic advice associated with the disposal of higher priced hazardous soils. We can also provide advice on landfill tax liabilities, to help reduce costs.
Utilising a web-based classification tool, soils can be classified as either hazardous or non-hazardous. Our process includes:

  • Collection of samples
  • Soil analysis for relevant contaminants of concern
  • Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) testing & interpretation

This is an efficient way to provide early-stage identification of potential issues or costs that could challenge the viability of a project or promote the consideration of alternative remediation and/or disposal options.

Material & Resource Management Plans

On construction projects, the decision to dispose or reuse materials can have both a financial and sustainability impact on the job.

IKM can prepare material and waste management plans to facilitate the management and reuse of soils and materials where possible.

We help our clients to identify opportunities to both design out waste and reduce the amount of waste produced on projects in accordance with the waste hierarchy, project commitments and our Client’s own internal Environmental Management System’s (EMS) sustainability targets.

IKM’s approach is one of practicality and sustainability. In the development of Material Management Plans (MMP) and Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP), we consider the relevant guidance and best practices, to ensure as much of the material can be reused as possible, with due consideration given to the relevant licensing regime(s) for the project or site(s).

Our plans will also detail the processes to be applied for recording the movement of materials on/off site and will set out control measures to ensure that any stockpiled materials or waste storage does not cause a pollution incident.
