Brief
IKM Consulting was appointed by a developer to produce a waste management strategy for a major new mixed residential and light industrial development in Edinburgh. The strategy was required as part of the planning application for the development.
Solution
IKM reviewed external collection systems for recyclables and residual waste. This involved researching both available outdoor waste collection systems suitable for flatted properties, liaison with the Council regarding the compatibility of these systems with the Council's collection vehicles and working in close partnership with the architects to ensure that the requirements for the waste collection systems were included in the site layout.
Given that the properties were to provide affordable accommodation and were relatively small, various collection systems were considered as an integral part of the internal design. This was to ensure that separating waste was made as easy as possible for householders. In addition, the light industrial units were designed to allow waste being collected within the premises and to be easily moved to the kerbside for collection.
Outcome
Based on IKM's recommendations, the client submitted a successful planning application to the City of Edinburgh Council.
