Brief
IKM Consulting was commissioned by a major waste management company to undertake an assessment of contamination in a former waste transfer station to allow the company to surrender the Waste Management Licence and sell the site.
Solution
IKM undertook a desk study to identify potential sources of contamination resulting from previous site users. A site walkover was undertaken to obtain visual and olfactory evidence of contamination on site.
A conceptual site model was drawn up based on the findings, highlighting the potential risks present on the site.
Recommendations were made to remove redundant equipment and structures from the site and to empty an interceptor that treated water from surface drains. A detailed report with recommendations of works required to allow SEPA to surrender the licence was submitted to the client.
Outcome
Using IKM's report, the client proceeded to surrender the site licence successfully.
