Issue

IKM Consulting Ltd is highly experienced in the complexities of waste classification and the management of excavated soils and resulting waste streams.

Once excavated, soils may be classified as waste, which may limit their potential for on or off site re-use and / or require application for waste management exemption.

Services

The classification of soils with regard to the waste management regulations depends on several factors, some of which require site specific discussions with SEPA.

IKM are experienced in dealing with these issues and are able to provide a number of services depending on our client's requirements. These include:

  • A rapid preliminary soil classification using onsite equipment in conjunction with previously obtained laboratory analysis to enable almost instantaneous classification of soil.
  • Classification of inert, non-hazardous, stable non-reactive hazardous and hazardous soils as described in the Joint Agency Publication, WM2 Edition 2.1, 2006.
  • Provision of a report identifying the soil classification, recommendations and associated costs for the re-use, treatment and/or disposal of excavated soil.
  • Preparation of Waste Management Licence Exemption Forms to enable the potential re-use of soils for on or off site purposes.

Outcome

Using our wealth of experience and technical expertise IKM aim to supply our clients with the following:

  • Alternative solution to the disposal of soils.
  • Substantial savings of tens of thousands of pounds in disposal costs.
  • Potentially provide a material for construction and engineering purposes either on or off site.
  • Prevent unnecessary stockpiling between excavation and offsite removal due to the rapid turn around of results when using onsite testing.
  • Better control and understanding of waste stream classifications by onsite testing methods so reducing disposal costs.
