Brief
IKM Consulting Ltd were instructed to assess the conditions of underground structures and services on a route proposed for the transfer of a pre-assembled process unit from Grangemouth docks to BP's facility at Kinneil.
A five span masonry arch bridge across the River Avon also required to be assessed as part of the study.
Solution
The work had to be carried out in a very short time and working closely with the utility companies, IKM was able to verify the route was secure. However, the old masonry bridge required re-pointing and grouting. This work was carried out on time and on budget.
Outcome
Detailed inspection identified numerous defects on the bridge which were repaired utilising rope access techniques. Analysis of the bridge was undertaken utilising state of the art masonry arch analysis software and a full design assessment package issued to Falkirk Council for approval prior to transportation of the 500 tonne load.
