Brief
IKM Consulting Ltd was appointed to provide scientific support during the remediation of a former styrene plant in a large refinery complex prior to redevelopment.
A site investigation was carried out and types and levels of contamination established.
Remediation work to remove the contaminated material to risk assessed levels was then undertaken.
Solution
IKM used on-site testing equipment to guide the principal contractor throughout the excavation of the contaminated material. IKM also provided occupational monitoring during the project to protect site operatives from potentially toxic vapours.
The use of on-site equipment ensured an efficient excavation and did not require long periods between excavation and backfilling, a major advantage in the permeable ground conditions encountered on the site.
Outcome
On-site testing allowed the job to be completed with the minimum amount of material removed which reduced disposal costs, and was more environmentally sustainable, a key factor in the client's decision.
The use of a soil hospital to treat the contaminated material was a cheaper, more sustainable option than landfilling.
