Brief
IKM was requested by an oil company to undertake an assessment of secondary containment measures at a major oil storage facility. The client needed to know that there was adequate containment within the existing bund floors and walls to prevent the migration of contaminants within the site and to offsite receptors, in the event of a major spillage.
Solution
The assessment included a review of historical and archive information and a review of pre and post construction site investigations. A walkover was undertaken of the asset and the condition of the secondary containment measures surveyed.
A Conceptual Site Model (CSM) was developed based on a review of the history of development of the Asset, ground conditions, hydrology and hydrogeology from archived information held by the Asset and by third parties.
Following the development of a CSM, an assessment was undertaken to estimate the approximate time for product to leak through the bund floors, or the side walls, following either a catastrophic failure of the tank (full release) or partial release of the tank contents.
Outcome
IKM are highly experienced in the assessment of secondary containment measures within tank farm facilities.
IKM were able to recommend short and long-term remedial actions which could be incorporated into the Asset's maintenance regime.
