Brief
IKM Consulting provided structural engineering support to Donaldson Associates for the construction of a new 1.5km section of East Coast Main Line between Edinburgh and Dunbar. The railway was being compromised by mine subsidence.
Solution
Donaldson's solution included diverting the railway to a new route under which a filed slab was constructed and deep grouting undertaken. IKM Consulting engineer's assisted in the design of a pile concrete slab to support the track over areas subjected to mining settlement.
IKM also worked on the structural design of permanent overhead electricity line pylons , temporary signal foundations, and prepared sheet pile wall temporary works design to maintain track stability during the works.
Outcome
The new section of track was successfully constructed without compromising track stability.
