Loss of Containment,

Brief

IKM were appointed after a spillage of crude oil from a buried valve pit, to advise on the clean up and disposal of the resulting soil and groundwater contamination.

Solution

  • A visual inspection was undertaken to determine the extent of spillage.
  • Delineation of the soil contamination was undertaken using rapid on-site testing equipment, with samples taken for laboratory analysis.
  • Boreholes were installed to determine deep soil and groundwater contamination.
  • A Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessment was undertaken to determine the risk to site workers and the likelihood of the migration of contaminated groundwater.
  • Plans were produced detailing requirements for further excavation.
  • Excavated waste was classified, and the preferred waste disposal option identified.

Outcome

IKM were able to rapidly delineate the contamination, reduce disposal costs and minimise the amount of remediation required.
