Loss of Containment,
Brief
IKM were appointed after a spillage of crude oil from a buried valve pit, to advise on the clean up and disposal of the resulting soil and groundwater contamination.
Solution
- A visual inspection was undertaken to determine the extent of spillage.
- Delineation of the soil contamination was undertaken using rapid on-site testing equipment, with samples taken for laboratory analysis.
- Boreholes were installed to determine deep soil and groundwater contamination.
- A Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessment was undertaken to determine the risk to site workers and the likelihood of the migration of contaminated groundwater.
- Plans were produced detailing requirements for further excavation.
-
Excavated waste was classified, and the preferred waste disposal option identified.
Outcome
IKM were able to rapidly delineate the contamination, reduce disposal costs and minimise the amount of remediation required.
