Case Study: Mine-Water Discharge Monitoring.
Location: East Lothian.
Download: mine-water-discharge-monitoring.pdf

Brief

The East Coast Main Line was being affected by an acidic mine water discharge into a railway cutting. Signalling problems resulted from the electrically conductive water lying in the track bed. IKM Consulting carried out a year-long monitoring programme of water quality and prepared a preliminary design for the development of a treatment scheme.

Solution

Following a detailed interpretation of the results in relation to the geology, discussions were held with SEPA to agree short term acceptable discharge levels and agree parameters for a permanent treatment system and eventual discharge consent.
