Brief

IKM was appointed by Angus Council, as part of their contaminated land assessment strategy under Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act (Section 78), to assess the potential environmental impacts from closed landfill sites within the Montrose and Forfar areas.

Solution

The project involved desk studies for five sites and these were undertaken simultaneously. The information gathered was used to prepare preliminary environmental assessment models identifying potential pollutant linkages.  Outline recommendations were also prepared for site investigation works and risk assessments to assess the environmental impact of each site in more detail.

A separate study was undertaken at a closed landfill site in Kirriemuir. This involved a desk study and an intrusive site investigation to determine the extent of contamination.

Outcome

Following the site investigation, detailed recommendations were made regarding the environmental status of the sites.  Remedial actions and future monitoring requirements were recommended, in particular with regard to surrounding residential properties.
