Brief
IKM Consulting were appointed to provide expert witness services, and to carry out a detailed site investigation of petroleum contamination at a restaurant, shop and filling station.
Solution
The investigation comprised internal and external pits, boreholes, on-site gas chromatography and groundwater analysis. Dangerous levels of benzene vapours were identified in the restaurant and closure was necessary. The source of the leak was identified and short term remedial measures instigated.
Detailed risk assessments were carried out and remediation parameters agreed. Following vapour extraction and monitoring, the restaurant was declared safe to re-open.
Outcome
IKM's expertise and technical advice provided the site owner with the necessary information to take legal action against the polluter.
