Brief

The Meadowbank cooling towers, Sheffield, locally known as Tinsley Towers, represented a challenge to traditional demolition techniques for over a decade, principally due to their proximity to the M1 motorway situated less then 20m away.

IKM were appointed to develop a risk based demolition strategy and design the extent of pre-weakening, explosive charges works required and determine the size of anticipated debris pile.

Solution

IKM conducted a Risk Workshop for all interested parties, including the development of a risk mitigation report.

A structural assessment of Towers no.6 and no.7 was undertaken, which led to the calculation of blast levels for demolition.

Outcome

Following the scheduled closure of the M1, both cooling towers were successfully demolished using less than 20kg of explosives per tower. The adjacent motorway viaduct sustained no damage.
