Case Study: Derivation of Treatment Targets.

Brief

IKM were appointed by a specialist waste contractor to derive target thresholds for soil from a treatment facility, prior to the material's use as restoration cover for a former landfill.

Solution

A conceptual model considering the landfill's future use as a park and managed woodland was developed. Target thresholds that were protective of future park users and of the nearby Firth of Forth, a SSSI, were derived. The site was zoned for conservatism with respect to the foreshore. A user friendly spreadsheet was produced for the client with treatment targets for over 50 contaminants.

Outcome

The treatment target values were approved by SEPA. The soil treatment facility is a sustainable approach which limits the requirement for excavation of suitable cover material and transport to the site, and avoids disposal of approximately 150,000T of contaminated material/year to landfill.
