Brief
IKM Consulting Ltd were requested to provide structural and civil design for the redevelopment of a small castle in East Lothian.
The castle had been run down for a number of years and it was the client's intent to restore the castle to its former condition.
Solution
It was identified that a floor level had previously been removed from the existing building. In order to reinstate this floor level IKM Consulting Ltd undertook a site investigation and a condition survey of the existing structure.
IKM Consulting Ltd designed an underpinning solution to allow installation of the additional floor level. New floors, load bearing structure and roof were then designed in accordance with the NHBC Standards to achieve the large open spaces required by the client.
Outcome
The building was restored to its former glory using a mixture of new and old construction techniques. The client received a vast amount of interest and the property was sold for over £1,000,000.
