Brief
Following recent major incidents at Petrochemical Complexes around the world, blast risk has become a key concern with structures within these complexes. IKM Consulting Ltd were appointed to carry out a quantitative risk assessment on the proposed reuse of a redundant building for control rooms and utilities for a major new process installation.
Solution
IKM carried out a highly detailed structural assessment of the building to assess its strength and integrity. It was concluded that the building could be improved to modern standards. Following the assessment, IKM designed a refurbishment scheme which took into account the risk of blast. New offices and control rooms were also designed by IKM.
During the construction works, IKM provided contract management and supervision services.
Outcome
The buildings were successfully and cost effectively put back into safe use. Upgrading the old structures saved the client the expense of a new building and recycled an old building.
