Brief

IKM Consulting Ltd were appointed to review two third party site investigations for an industrial services site contaminated with diesel and engine oil.

It was concluded that the proposed remedial solution was inappropriate and that savings of at least £100k could be made by adopting an alternative remedial design and a quantitative risk assessment.

Solution

The low cost scheme, using on-site bioremediation, provided a viable and fit-for-purpose alternative, with full approval from the regulatory authorities.

On-site testing was used to determine the degree of contamination and establish which areas required on-site, ex-situ bioremediation.

Some 250m3 of soil were excavated and bioremediated in ex-situ windrows under an exemption to the Waste Management Licensing Regulations.

An independent laboratory was used for method calibration and final validation of the successful clean-up.

Outcome

The contaminated soils had reached the agreed target value within two months and were recompacted in the excavation area. A clean layer of quarry product was spread on the site to prepare the site for divestment.

Final savings were in the order of £105k.
